This demo extends the GraphView demonstration and deals with this question:

It extends the demo by randomly choosing a node and highlighting its neighbours and focussing the node itself.
This happens in addition to the mouse actions and does not interfere.
Furthermore it simply demonstrates the usages of a focus group and the "hard coded" method setHighlighted in this context like written in my answer.
