zone manager beta

a shady attempt to forcefully trap prefuse nodes

Zone manager is a small open source "add on" library for the information visualization toolkit prefuse. It is meant to help organizing nodes of prefuse graphs by providing classes to define and maintain zone areas within your prefuse visualization, to which nodes can be added.

At the moment zone manager supports circular and rectangular zones, for which customizable wall forces are created in order to "lock" nodes within these areas after they have been added to them. Zones can be flexible in order to adjust dynamically to the current number of nodes they contain. Possible adjustments include rescaling of zones or nodes within. Focus groups and aggregates are created and maintained for each zone, which makes handling of these "zone organized" nodes convenient

Check the gallery or try the demos coming along with the download to get an idea about its features.

Zone manager is in its early development stages but seems to be mature enough to ask potential users to give it a first try and support the further development with their feedback and suggestions. Making it available is also meant as an appeal to other users of the wonderful prefuse toolkit to help creating a prefuse assistance pool (pap) by making developed tools associated with prefuse available for the community.

Suggestions, complaints, bug reports etc. are most welcome.

Be well

Zone manager is about to be refactored right now, there is no download available at the moment. When will it be back on stage? Not sure yet.

announcements

2007.9.27 After a delicious sleep for over 11 month there seem to be a chance that this project gets revived again. Things are just starting to manifest but if you are in general interested in the clustering feature implemented by zone manager you might want to join the discussion in the prefuse forum about a reimplementation of this tool rather than trying to use zone manager as it is right now.

2006.10.10: Due to an itch of laziness and other itches, the actual development of zone manager is put down for the time being.
Many thanks to Mark from Amsterdam for manifold and skillful advices, which unfortunately haven't flown into zone manager yet, but make the idea of reactivation of zone manager reasonable.

2006.10.10: Due to user request and in order to follow prefuse in that regard, zone manager is now licensed under the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) license.
